Can anyone tell me what they think is th BEST in antivirus and spyware and
all of that stuff in ONE software program. Gateway puts out one and Norton
has their internet security and Inoculate has one I believe. I want to get
a good one = its for home use for Windows XP.
Thanks.

In rereading Gateways mail to me, they say in addition to Norton AntiVirus I
should get the Gateway Securit Suite which is a spysweeper, pre-empt,
window washer and ghost surf. Is this all necessary????

Norton Internet Security 2005 has:
Firewall -- Intrusion Detection
Antivirus -- Standard shield, Email scanning, on-demand scanning
Antispam -- will integrate with most POP3 email clients
Ad-blocking
Popup-blocking
Parental Controls

Trend Internet Security 2005 has:
Firewall -- Intrusion Detection (wont allow you to add new applications to
its list of trusted applicatiojns)
Antivirus -- viruses and trojans
Antispam

I have tried many firewalls and antivirus packages. I like most of them. I
guess it just depends on your needs. If you do much surfing of dangerous
sites, by all means get a STRONG antivirus/antitrojan/firewall suite.

By the way, my current suite is Norton Internet Security 2005

In my opinion, you should stay away from these all in one "internet security
suites." If you have already installed SP2 with default settings along with
all updates, you don't already have a spyware or adware problem, and you know
how to keep this crud off your system, i.e. if your machine is already clean,
you are much better off with just a standalone antivirus program and a
firewall solution (I personally use the built-in firewall with SP2, while
others favor a standalone third party firewall solution such as Zone Alarm or
Sygate). The best defense to crudware is avoidance, not detection and
removal after your machine has already been compromised.

Oh, I almost forgot -- you were asking for specific suggestions for software.
For antivirus, I personally prefer the standalone versions of CA
(EZ-Antivirus) or the standalone antivirus product from Trend Micro. Again,
avoid the versions that are in security suites, but the standalone antivirus
programs are sepaerately available online or in any good computer store. In
fact, CA offers a free one year subscription to their standalone antivirus
program if you access their website using the links that begin in Windows
Security Center that comes with SP2. But the reason I prefer CA is because
it isn't the memory or resource hog that other programs (most notably Norton)
are, yet it is every bit as effective at stopping viruses.

Hi Patti,

I cant say which antivirus software is best, but I can tell you my
experience with eTrust (formerly InoculateIT) is positive, and would
recommend it without hesitation. Two to avoid are Norton and McAfee.
As for Spyware detection, removal, and prevention here is what I use.
