XP Updates on Home Network?

Hello

I have a home network with a XP Home Dell desktop and 2 XP Pro Dell laptops.
What I would like to do is have my desktop automatically download updates
for XP and Office and save the files to its hard drive. Then I would like my
laptops to check my desktop for updates instead of checking the MS on the
internet.

I would like to do this because I have noticed that I am performing the same
dowload 3 times when XP and Office updates are released. This means that
when MS releases a 4 meg file I end up downloading 12 meg. I have read that
this can be done but I can not find the settings in the Control Panel to do
it.

Please help me set this up.

Also Microsoft, please make this easier to configure with clear instructions
on how to set it up.

Thank you.

Edmund

In a home environment - what you are asking to do cannot be done. You need
a "SUS" server in order to accomplish things in the way you are describing.
However, you can download the updates individually, burn them to CD/DVD or
share them on the network and install them manually..

You could just turn on automatic updates on all of your computers and let
them get the updates at a certain time each night whenever they are on and
connected to the Internet and when it is unlikely that anyone will be around
using the computer. This way - things get done and you don't have to worry
about it.

If you like the manually control...

How to use the Windows Update Catalog

Windows Update Catalog

One easy thing to do is to turn off Automatic updates on all of the PCs in
question, use one computer and visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and
select each of the updates on the right and select "Details" for each one..
Go tot he associated "Help and Support" for each of the updates you choose
and then find the section of the description web page for each one that as
something worded like, "Download the ###### package now." and download and
save to a central loaction each one. Then you have the updates to burn and
distribute and/or connect to and install manually over the network. To
install you just run the downloaded file(s).

Thanks Shenan - I looked up the Software Update Services (SUS) Server and
that is exactly what I want. Too bad MS does not have one for home networks.
However, I did go to the MS suggestions page and suggest they make one for
home networks. Only time will tell how that will turn out. It seems to me
that with so many homes having more than one computer and all those computers
being on home networks that MS would have put something like this in SP2. Oh
well ... I'll do it manually until they come up with something.
