I hope to build my first PC in thenext few weeks. I currently have a Dell XPS-T700r with a Powerleap 1.4G Celeron, 512 MB RAM, 80G Maxtor 7,200 HD 30G Maxtor 7,200 HD, ATI Radeon 9200SE, a USB 2.0 PCI hub card with a 3.5" bay 4 outlet unit (7 total outlets), SB Live sound card and other assorted goodies. What I want to do is basically build a modern version of this old workhorse, preferably running an AMD CPU. Note I said workhorse, not racehorse or gamer.
Any suggestions for a good case, PSU, mobo, etc? I like the looks of the Antec Sonata, but I'm not wedded to it.
Thanks!

Yeah, the sonata is a nice case. But for work machines, which it sounds like you're building, I get cheapo cases from dumpinggoods.com. Like $15 (Watch the sharp edges!!).

For my last work pc, I used a Barton 2500+ and a Shuttle an35n-ultra mobo ($55). Plugged in some Corsair value select ram & runs fine.

You might wanna get a mobile (2400, 2500 or 2600). It's very easy to OC them 3200+ speeds.

Good psu's - Fortron, Sparkle, enermax

Mobile XP 2600+ (11X200)
Abit NF7-S v 2.0
Maxtor 60GB ATA 133 7200RPM
512MB Corsair Twinx 3200LL
BBA 9800 Pro
Enermax Noisetaker 420 watts
Win98SE

Wow, telling him to dump a nice sturdy Palo Alto case for a cheapo? Ouch!

I wanted to stay under $600. I already have the monitor, video, HD, etc. I broke down and snagged a kit from Newegg:

Antec True430 PSU
CoolerMaster Praetorian case
Gigabyte GA-K8NS Pro Mobo
AMD Athlon64 3000+ Retail (w/fan & heat sink)
512 MB Kingston Hyperx PC 3200
And a floppy drive.
Came out with shipping to around $642.

That should be an impressive PC, what kind of video card are you going to run in it?

I'm going to recycle parts from my existing Dell XPS-T700r. Such as the ATI Radeon 9000 SE, Western Digital 80 GB HD w/8mb cache, NEC1100A DVD-RW, and 52x CD-RW. Since the Gigabyte already has sound and NIC on board, I can keep those piece and run the Dell with it's original ATI 128 Rage Fury Pro and 30GB Maxtor.

Now for another silly question. I want to transfer my NEC 1100A DVD+RW to the CollerMaster Praetorian case. Of corse, the NEC is that awful putty white. I did put in a black floppy and it looks a lot better. So, is there any place where replacement fronts can be found? Or would it be simpler to get some Testor's Gloss Black model paint and paint the bezel?
