I have WinXP Pro SP1 - installed SP2 (took I 1/2 hours) and now Windows will
not load desktop - waited 15-20 minutes with hard drive constantly running,
then I switched off - removed SP2 and restored back to earlier setting.
Any ideas why SP2 does not work for me?
I have Norton AV and ZoneAlarm Pro installed - could it be these programmes?

Any help gratefully received.

Hi

Did you disable your AV program prior to installing SP2?

The following articles are very useful for a SP2 pre-installation:

"Introduction to Windows XP Service Pack 2" - by Barb Bowman

"What to Know Before You Download and Install Windows XP Service Pack 2"

It might be worth disconnecting your pc from the internet and disabling
norton av and zonealarm and try installing windows XP that way. There are
some applications that ask you to disable these services when installing
them, but I don't remember SP2 asking that.

Is your copy of SP2 a download or on a CD?
