My father-in-laws' xP home computer gets to the point at which the d/top
icons appear whereupon the screen goes black and the computer reboots.
This happens 3 or 4 times in succession before the computer will remain on.
He gets no error messages but I strongly suspect he has disabled error
reporting since he always tells me the messages mean nothing to him (!)

I will get him to turn these on again but it will be up to me to go 'round
and straighten things out (ho-hum!).

Could some kind soul give me a quick rundown of the issues I may need to
address so that I have somewhere to start?
Yrs Flo.

Here are a couple of suggestions:

Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System.
Click on the Advanced tab.
In the Startup and Recovery section, click on the Settings
button.
In the System Failure section, remove the check mark next to
"Automatically restart".
Click OK twice.

Now when the problem occurs you should see a blue screen which
will contain information concerning the nature of the error.
Record all the pertinent info.

Next, go to Start -> Run and type eventvwr.msc in the Open box.
In the Event Viewer, right click Applications and select
Properties from the drop down menu.
Click on the Filter tab and remove the check mark next to
Information.
Look for any entries that coincide with when this problem occurs.
Do the same in the System branch.

Armed with this information, post your question to a newsgroup
that gets more traffic. Start here with Windows XP General and
