I made a minor upgrade to my desktop system. I just replaced all the flat IDE cables and floppy cable with rounded cables.
One floppy cable and three IDE cables. Oddly enough my case doesn't look much neater but I do I have much more air space around the cpu cooler.
I like how the rounded cables are soft and flexable. It was a fairly expensive for cables. I spent $75 CDN on four cables.
I need to find a way to make the power cables look neater. I was thinking about using 1/2" and 3/8" automotive wire loom.
Right now I have the power cables grouped together with tie wraps but it looks really messy.
Anyone have any good suggestions for power cable clean up?
well, if you go to a store like Circuit City or some Radioshack, you can get those 1 use plastic ties that sorta, zip on and lock in place. If you want to clean up your case, then use the little locking plastic grips with the double sided tape, you can stick them all over your case to hold the cables
Instead of Rdram, why not just merge 4 Sdram channels...
I know what you mean. I have lots of tie wraps.
Some people call them cable ties, others call them tie wraps. I refer to them as Panduit Ties. Panduit is one of the main manufactures of cable ties.
I think I'm going to pick up some automotive cable loom today. It's a laterally split corrugated plastic sleeve that slips over small groups of insulated wire. It comes in many colours but the only place I know of that sells it locally has black. I think that will be a nice finishing touch to the inside of my desktop.
I used the shielded rounded cables with clear insulation. It gives the braided hose look to my cables. Plus I think having shielded rounded cables may help with any crosstalk problems.
I'll be using lots of black tie wraps on the smaller cable bundles and fan wires.
The automotive wire loom did not work out as well as I planned.
I put it on and it really bulked up cables. I ended up taking it off and using lots of cable ties. I tucked away the cables that are not used. I shortened the longer cables by folding and bundling with tie wraps.
It looks neater now. But I am still disappointed that it didn't work out as I wanted it too.
I wanted the inside of my case to look neat and have good air flow. I really like the cases I have seen with windows and cold cathode lamps. But my case has too many accessories requiring power to make it look perfect.
Oh well I wish I could have used wire loom. But I made it as neat as possible with rounded IDE cables and over three dozen tie wraps.
rounded cables are worthless, they make more of a mess and obstruct more airflow than standard ide cables if you fold them right. I have to have a clean case, I have a window and I overclock. I reccomend sitting down with your computer and just taking it apart and experimenting with different placements of the internals. After a few hours of trying you should have a tight case search google for ideas folding the wires around
