My computer has had a strange crash a couple times that have really stunk my room up. What happens is I lose video signal and the computer just stinks the room up while apparantly continuing to run. I thought it was the power supply at first and replaced it but I just had the crash again. I sniffed around and it doesn't seem to be from my CPU, but I could smell a bit off my video card, it's hard to tell since my PSU is my micro case's only ventilation and the smell has mostly been exhausted to my room by the time I open the case up. I have had 4 hours of uptime now with no problem but I know inevitably this will happen again. I suspect my video card but am cringing at the thought of replacing it due to the $$$ and want to get the advice of computer experts like you first. Here's my rig:
Cheap $8 micro case (old power supply blew out, the one I just got is a 425w dual fan justpc brand I got from fry's)
Abit IS-10 mobo (I use sound and network from this)
FIC AT009 video card (Radeon 9000 pro 64mb)
120gb western digital hard drive
Intel 2.6c processor
2x512mb corsair valuram ddr400
Have a dead rat marionette theatre inside? Maybe somethings on fire in there. The psu is probably the cause. You get what you pay for in the end, and if you buy cheap you buy twice.
Haven't had the problem again, I guess some cat hair got in the PS or something. The smell reminded me of when the cpu fan on my old box blew out and I had frequent crashes due to that, same sort of scent.
