When it's released what will it do to the old 32 bit CPU's? Will it cause a
slowdown in performance? Will I need to upgrade to a 64 bit CPU? Thanks.

Thanks Mike. Will Longhorn slow down the performance of 32 bit processors or
will I not even notice the change? I'm asking because I went into Fry's
yesterday and the salesman said that 64 bit software would be coming out as
soon as Longhorn was released. His implication was that anyone without a 64
bit processor would somehow suffer. Was he just selling?

64bit is obviously the future, and the hardware manufacturers are eager to
get us all to upgrade to the next level.. that is how they make their money,
after all.. however, I am not convinced that 'now' is a good time to
upgrade.. support for 64bit will get better, but is still very much in its
infancy..

Longhorn will install on older computers.. it may not have the complete
feature set of the latest and greatest hardware, but it will still
essentially be Longhorn.. during install, Longhorn will decide what features
the detected hardware can support, and will install accordingly.. I would
imagine that any hardware upgrades made to a system will enable more
features to be added..

As yet, it is difficult to say what features may or may not be available..
we will have to wait and see..

In the meantime, 32bit is alive and well, and will continue in this way for
some time to come..

Every new version of Windows has had increased hardware requirements -
CPU speed, amount of RAM, and disk space, compared to the preceding
version.

There is no reason not to expect the next version of Windows
(Longhorn) to carry on with this tradition.

Therefore a computer that is marginal for Windows XP will likely prove
to be inadequate for Longhorn.

Insofar as I am aware precise hardware requirements for Longhorn have
not yet been published by Microsoft.
