More Information

Hello everyone, I have a couple 8mm Hi8 tapes that I would like to capture and eventually put on DVD. My camcorder has S-video out, and mono audio out (single RCA jack).

I've seen some online companies doing this for around $15 (Hi8 to DVD with chapter selection), but I don't feel confortable sending my tapes out. Have any of you heard of any big retailers that do it as well?

Otherwise, I'll be needing a capture card, capture software, DVD authoring software, and DVD burner.

I need help selecting the above. My main concern is the
capturing card. Should I go with internal or external? Also, how much space will I need for the temporary 2 hours worth of uncompressed video?

I've heard that VirtualDub is very good for capturing. I forgot to mention that I'd also like to leave a compressed video copy (Xvid or Divx) of the tapes on harddisk, so I'll probably be using VirtualDub for that. Suggestions are welcome though.

If I can get everything done for under $100, I'll probably do it myself. Is this possible?

Thanks
