Built in microphone on Armada M700 does not seem to work

I have an Armada M700 with Win 2000. The built into the screen
microphone doesn't seem to do anything: if I try to record, the sound
recorder utility's "virbrating line" remains dead throughout the test.
If, on the other hand, I use an external mic, it all works well. No
volume controls are muted and the mic controls are set mid-way.

Any suggestions to turn on the built-in mic would be appreciated!
