1 Router, a cable modem, and 4 computers

Hey all, first time poster here.

Ive got a question for you guys. My Setup: Cable modem plugged into a Linksys DSL/Cable router with 4 computers attached. Now, will my connection speed be affected by everyone being on the router? Furthermore, my understanding is that the router will basically be funneling all traffic from the 4 computers thru the 1 ip address that comes with the cable modem. So would that be slower as opposed to simply plugging all computers into a 5 port hub w/ the cable modem and getting each computer their own ip from my ISP? Any Questions / Comments?

it will probably slow ya down some .. the router assigns a dynamic ip addy to each computer as you know and it is likely your isp will charge you extra for more addresses

paying for extra IP's is not worth any (if any at all) boost in performance. The NAT encode/decode is plenty fast. If you want performace boost you're much better off spending the money on higher up/down speeds (if available) or if not available from cable, switch to DSL if you want to spend some $$$

I've currently got 3 comps hooked up to a router and cable. No speed problems. The only thing you have to watch is a lot of cable companies will cap your upload. This can be annoying for hosting servers, etc.

Your DSL speed won't be affected, but the bandwidth will be shared amongst the users.

BTW NAT setups aren't too friendly with MSN messenger file transfers, so make sure it's what you want to do. Static IPs are great if you know how to set em up.

What good is multiple IP Addresses, when they all come through the same Cable Modem 10Mbps connection?

when you see smoke is that a good sign?

You can setup up servers on individual IPs, and use them to host websites, FTP sites etc coupled with domain names. Otherwise, there's no real advantage over a single static IP with NAT.
