Hi
When I do my hobby (transscribing 400 years old doc's) I have a folder open + 5 to
20 pictures open (2Mb each) with Ms Photo Editor (which serve my purpos perfectly) +
Access + a genealogy program.
I do not think that 2.2GHz, 1Gb ram is stressed, not much is running when I type and
only half the ram is used. I have Norton AV + AdAwareAdWatch + MsAntiSpyware +
ZoneAlarm running.
From time to time I want to open another folder and click EXPLORER - then all
programs is minimised, the disktopicons dissapear (together with the icons down
right besides the clock) only wallpaper is seen and then sort of refresh the disktop
but the icon down right has gone and no folders or explorer opens and my carefully
arrenged open-program-order is spoiled :-(
What is happening ?

Explorer is crashing. Run the desktop (you've plenty of RAM for this tweak)
as a separate process:
It may not always help everyone but it's generally just the ticket for most
people. It uses an additional 8 MB of RAM or so on most systems and it's the
best resource spending I've found for the random Explorer crashes.
