Really big project

I'll be finishing most of my upgrades and features on my computer soon enough and I wanted to start on my second of two projects. I wanted to have a system in my room with soon to come surround sound, voice recognition (wireless ), and custom water cooling system. Now I wanted a system for my ( :frown: 1994 saturn).

I've been doing some researching and getting some advice from my brother, who does car audio installation. I wanted to start with the basics of GPS and Music into the computer setup. But I've got some questions.

I was wondering if I should go laptop or a desktop. The laptop would help with the power consumption issue. However, I do have an extra battery cell. I'm going to get that issue solved tommorow, I hope. I'm going to be mounting a 15" touch screen, obviously, set up a GPS receiver, and get the audio system in, both GPS and Audio through the computer.

Most definately a laptop. The 2.5 inch drives are better at G's than the larger ones due to the size. And you still will want extra battery option.

I just talked to a friend and he said he could get me a basic computer for free, so I'll probably do that. I'll have to mod the interior a bit to get the inputs and display up. I'll just go with the extra battery cell and run the PSU on that. The touchscreen is $380. Now I'll have to find the GPS receiver and Streets and Trips for cheap. I was also thinking of setting up a wifi network on the computer also. I'll have to look into that a bit. I'm pretty sure I can get a bluetooth headest from a local electronics shop for a decent amount. Am I forgetting anything else?

You will need an inverter since your car only has 12V DC.

Funny, I just remember using one a few years ago, I'll have to see if I still have it. I'm going to have to look into an LCD screen because the 15" would probably be to big for the front dash or near it for that matter.

I haven't found the inverter yet but then again, I haven't looked to hard. The battery I have is actually a gel cell battery so I'll have to see how that holds up to deep-cycle.

I'm no battery expert but I bet that since gel cells are typically used in a racing environment chosen for low weight and that they are sealed it is likely that it won't be of a deep cycle construction. You may want to check out your batteries specs to be sure you don't ruin your expensive (no doubt) gel cell.

Well I just found the inverter and its got 2 slots for plugs and is a 350 continuous Watts and 600 maximum Watt. I'll probably go for an Optima deep cycle battery. I'm not sure how much I'll need but I found one for about $130.
