Cold Temp; Black LCD

Okay....it's not a phone device, but I need the group's expertise concerning
a handheld GPS unit with a LCD. It got too cold on an outing, apparently.
The display is black.

I can read the symbols and figures faintly under a VERY strong light, so I
know the device is working--except for the display. I brought it into a
70-degree environment for 48 hours to see if it would come back on its own.
So far, no.

Any thoughts about restoring the display? Thanks in advance, gang!

It has been known to happen to me that the contrast inadvertently got
set too high....
