Sometime very soon im getting a NIC, as well as a 4 port adsl router.
I was browsing a list of NIC's for sale in Australia and i found one was alot more expensive than the others.

Expensive NIC:

Cheaper 'normal' NIC:

Whats the deal? The expensive one has "Built in FIFO buffers" and "Low ethernet command processing overhead"

what the fudge are these things?

By the pictures, the more expensive one has a lower profile, which can be handy in smaller cases.

Remember, the cheaper it is the lower quality it can be. Though for NICs it really shouldn't matter, even crappy ones do ok.

Don't know if this applies to NICs as well: I have a crappy 56K modem i bought for about half what an official brand would have cost. It was a no-name, and I sure as hell got what i paid for: a piece of junk. Stopped working when i upgraded to WinXP, and the company was non-existent for downloading the drivers.

When people say cheap NIC I usually thought they mean D-Link, Linksys, or Netgear NIC and when people say expensive NIC I thought they means 3com or Intel NIC.
I have good experience with cheap NICs but I am not sure about very cheap NICs.

Im not too woried about size as i have a nice roomy midtower case and the PCI area is free from cables. Except of course the 1st and 2nd PCI slots that are unusable due to the mammoth AGP cooler
but i got 4 others.
