I just read the review of the Linksys USB100M. I agree that it sure sounds like a nifty tool to have handy, but I wonder if there's one more step that could be taken...
In light of all the USB storage devices becoming so popular and cheap, would it be possible to combine the 100M with a small storage device? It seems to me that adding at least enough ROM to stor the NIC drivers right on the device would be exceedingly handy. And if enough storage could be added for one or two really handy network utilities, a tech could have a real handful of power in this one device.
Have you thought of something like <A HREF="http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?action=info&p=20609&t=&l=&AvdID=1&CatID=47&GrpID=1&s=sr" target="_new">this?</A>
Available in 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB and even 1024MB if you're prepared to pay.

I think he would like to combine the two. Storage for drivers, diagnostic files ets. With a usb network adaptor in one device. Sounds like a goodplan or device.
I thought that by definition USB devices do contain their own drivers. Also, I've also always assumed, without really knowing, that a driver upgrade for a USB device would require some kind of firmware download.
I haven't had any USB devices with built in diagnostics. I'm guessing, as a manufacturer, it would be hard to justify the realatively expensive built in memory space for rarely used utilities when it is much less expensive overall to make them available on a web page.
the drivers for USB mass storage devices are built into windows me, 2k and xp. If you plug a USB zip into these os's it will auto identify also. In other systems you would have to install the drivers. The issue is, in 98 systems it would be irrelevant to have the nic drivers, because you would still have to install the USB storage drivers.
