I was browsing through my registry today when i discovered the following
litle snippet of text prefacing many different registry entries. Thinking
that it could only be the result of a virus or spyware infection i began to
delete every occurence but when they became quite numerous i began to think
maybe they were supposed to be there. can anyone tell me anything about this?
Google turns up nothing...

for example, one registry key is
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.8\shell\Print\command]
which has as an entry named (default) which is a REG_SZ key with the
following.
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\WINWORD.EXE" /x /n /dde
and then right below it is an entry named (command) which is a REG_MULTI_SZ
which displays the following
(f'^Vn-}f(YR]eAR6.jiWORDFiles>L&rfUmW.cG.e%fI4G}jd /x /n /dde
and an export of that key shows up as...
"command"=hex(7):28,00,66,00,27,00,5e,00,56,00,6e,00,2d,00,7d,00,66,00,28,00,\
59,00,52,00,5d,00,65,00,41,00,52,00,36,00,2e,00,6a,00,69,00,57,00,4f,00,52,\
00,44,00,46,00,69,00,6c,00,65,00,73,00,3e,00,4c,00,26,00,72,00,66,00,55,00,\
6d,00,57,00,2e,00,63,00,47,00,2e,00,65,00,25,00,66,00,49,00,34,00,47,00,7d,\

65,00,00,00,00,00

any clues or help would be appreciated

You should stay out of the registry. Seriously, there's no reason to be
deleting keys that don't don't 'look right' to you.

Ted,

I appreciate your concern but your reply really didn't help me any. To just
dust me off like that without any questions about my knowledge of computing,
the registry etc. really isn't what I needed or was looking for. If you have
something that could help I would appreciate it.

Reading some of your other replies to other folks about other issues it is
clear that you are very knowledgeable. I just wanted more than the simple
answer you supplied.

My advice is as I wrote. Discontinue your activity in the registry now and
save yourself from untold misery. If you want to spend the time to learn
about the registry in depth - more power to you - you will find many books
and web sites on the subject. Eventually you will accumulate enough
knowledge to realize what those of us who've 'been around' know: in a
properly maintained computer, there is rarely any need to venture into the
registry. As for removal of viruses: That is a job for your antivirus
software.

OK, OK, advice taken and received in the spirit which it was offered. Advice
I would likely offer to the average computer user. Now, you ought to know
that I am one of those who knows a little bit about this stuff. Been a beta
tester with MS since Windows 98 and have browsed the registry for many years
and have yet to hose my system. When in doubt I either back up the whole
registry or export the key in question. You also ought to know that I run
ZoneAlarm, MS Antispyware, and AVG antivirus and am ruthless about where I
browse the internet and what programs I install. My system is XP Pro SP2, and
Office is SP3 with MS Update set to autoupdate. The reason I was browsing in
the registry today is because an explorer window opens each time I boot
windows (ever since I installed the new SyncToy)and I was trying to find the
cause when I came across those weird entries. So, do either of you think you
could look at the original question and tell me what that stuff might be
from? Again, I would appreciate it.

Bob

FYI..
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/sysinfo/base/hkey_classes_root_key.asp

Looking at the various elements, I would say that it has something to do
with the exchange of data between MS Word and a local printer.. no doubt
somebody au fait with all registry entries will correct or add to it..
