Hello, I recently purchased a Realtek 810x NIC card to put on my machine. The problem was that my machine has an A7N8X motherboard with a built in NIC that works in Windows XP but not UNIX. I bought the NIC card, put it in the PCI slot (its in tight) and turned my comp on hoping for network access in both Fedora Linux and Windows XP. Yet, to my suprise it fails to work in either!

The problem Windows XP gives is: "This devicde cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)" It then tells me that if I disable devices I can use my piece of hardware, yet when I disable my built in NIC card and various other devices it still fails to work.

So, I emailed the fine people in Korea about my Asus NForce 2 and they replied saying, "Dear Jeff, Thank you for your e-mail. The resource is assigned by BIOS. So it is normal that you can modify it. For your case, I recommend you should update your BIOS or contact the motherboard manufacturer."

Well Ann Yeh was onto something when she started talking about my resources and BIOS etc. When I look at my resources under Input/Output I can see that both the NVIDIA NForce MCP2 IDE Controller and Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC occupy the range of 0000F000-0000F00F which I presume is problematic. My Realtek card is reported as being on IRQ 12 (the only one).

So I turned to our friends at ASUS. I updated my BIOS to 1007 yet this did not fix it. What can I do?? Can anybody help me? Thanks a lot. - Jeff Jensen

What I would try:
Uninstall your new NIC, and the onboard one.
Then pull the new NIC out and disable the onboard LAN in BIOS.
Boot up, then shutdown again, and put your new NIC into a different PCI slot than it was in before. Hopefully this will force your OS to reassign the resources for that card, and assign them to something thats not in use.

I did all of that and it changed absolutly nothing

Go to the Realtek site and download new drivers. The 2002 drivers that came with my 8139 were buggy, at least the Win98SE drivers are. I kept getting "The specified network resource or device is no longer available". No problems now.

All the Windows drivers at the Realtek site appear to be new. Linux drivers, well they are older and look less promising but give them a try.
