Hello,

A friend and I are putting together a good Athlon system. Using a 1GHz processor with Asus A7V. Going to be Adaptec 2940 SCSI controller, Plextor SCSI CD and CDRW, IBM ATA100 7200rpm hard drive (couldn't afford Ultra 160), 256MB PC133 Crucial Technology, Creative Labs Live MP3, and ATI Rage Fury Pro 4x 32MB. I know, there are faster processors, better video cards for games, etc., etc. This is strictly for office use and audio/video encoding/playback (hence the MP3 sound card and ATI non-Radeon card with video in/out). Also, this will be running Win2K Pro. I'm putting it all in an Antec case with a 300watt power supply and 2 extra case fans. It will be running 24/7. I want to make sure this is getting adequate power and cooling. I think 300 watts will be enough with the components in here, but what the heck do I use for a CPU fan?!!! I have no idea what brands to even start looking for other than PC Power & Cooling. I've been an Intel diehard all my life, and I'm finally giving up and going AMD this time. I just want to make sure I do it right, so I'm not dissappointed... ;-) What do you all think?

I really hate to do this to Tom but on Anandtech.com
they have a slightly out of date but still helpful cooling
review.. I followed their review and bout an ALPHA PAL-6035
with YS-Tech Fans, and it keeps my Duron 600 that is
currently clocked at 800 nice and cool but I am sure if
you do not plan to over clock you won't need such a beefy
heatsink and fan.. you would probably do well with the
Socket-A version of the Golden Orb Cooler it is inexpencive
and easy to find... If you must have the best I have heard
that there is an all copper Heatsink called the "Hedge Hog"
that does the best cooling but I am not sure, the article on
Anandtech is located here...

http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1279

and a good website that lists fans on it is

http://www.coolerguys.com/

Hope that this has been helpful!

Golden Orbs are not good for Socket A Athalons it's the Chrome Orbs that are for socket A Athalons. They're inexpensive and do the trick. If you're considering overclocking or good cooling any Alpha (6035 or PEP66) will do. They're also Globalwin FOP32-1 (Quiet YSTeck 26CFM) or FOP38 (Noisy Delta 38 CFM fan). 2Cooltek.com has a write-up on these heatsink/fans and rates them on the difference between ambient and stressed temps. Check them out.

Also I forgot, you can use Arctic Silver 80% pure liquified silver thermal paste to better transfer heat from the cpu to heatsink/fan. It's a small tube and only cost $14 and could be found at www.infodirect.com.

Thanks for the replies! I hear Tom's Hardware will be doing a fan/cooling review soon--can't wait for that. Anandtech's was a good review to read in the meantime, thanks for that tip. I've used Golden Orb's on the PIIIs I've built, I think I'll look for the Chrome Orb and give that one a shot. Thanks for all the info!

Well, I looked around for a while to find myself what I thought was the best heatsink for my Athlon XP1600... encompassing both performance, price, and noise level. I got myself a Vantec Aeroflow, and I think it performs pretty well... I've got idle temps of about 40 celcius, and with a cooling utility running i've got temps of about 32 idle, and 37-38 under load. Otherwise, a Thermaltake Volcano 9 is a good choice, and both run for about USD$30...
