XP Pro clean install wont finish,has tiny blue screen

I've looked in the KB & haven't found anything to help me with this - thanks
for any guesses you may have for me to try!!

Trying to install XP Pro, I repartition, reformat, & run ordinary default
installation. It gets to "installing devices" (I think) and the machine
hangs, with a 1/2" rectangular blue screen which appears to be part of the
original larger screen, containing a few letters and the cursor. It's a
generic PC with these parts:

video card: advanta tnt2m64 ms8808 ver.1a
m-board: k7t266 pro ver1.0
bios: 686 amibios aw09 9225
front sticker: "amd athlon"
monitor: AOpen A705
