My pc blacked out for no reason, said kernel error; after that, I couldn't
restart so I had to do a complete system recovery (yes, wiped out all my
info, restored pc to its original purchase state); after I re-loaded all my
software & files, I went to tools in "C" drive properties & clicked error
check; I okayed it to check at restart; at restart, an error message said
cannot open volume for direct access. pc then booted to my desktop. pc slow &
again wouldn't boot up a couple days later; I again today did a system
recovery; again, upon clicking error check at startup I receive the same
message-cannot open volume for direct access. I went to tools again & just
told it to error check, not fix files; it started to check, got to phase 2
then closed out saying windows cannot perform error check . Help ! Have xp
home edition; pc is approx. 2 yrs.; have HP that doesn't have XP disks; prior
to this error check always worked, even when I system recovered it last Fall.

Start > run > type "cmd" (without the quotes) > press enter > type "chkdsk
/r /x" (without the quotes) > press enter > at the prompt go ahead and tell
it to schedule it for your next boot. Reboot. If it's not the C: drive then
you can type "chkdsk d: /r /x" if you wanted, where "d:" is substitute the
letter of the drive in question.
