Hi,

Over the past couple months, my computer has been freezing up when it has
been sitting idle for a couple of hours. I have also been getting alot of
blue screen crashes lately. Looking into the event viewer after rebooting
the computer when it freezes, I do see 1 reocurring warning listed:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: ati2mtag
Event Category: WDM
Event ID: 1049
Date: 9/11/2005
Time: 8:22:24 AM
User: N/A
Description:
SRB command failed – SRB_GET_DEVICE_PROPERTY

0020: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........

SRB command failed – SRB_GET_DEVICE_PROPERTY

I have a suspicion that this may be the cause of the computer freezing up,
however I have already updated the drivers to the latest version and the
problems continue to occur.

As far as the blue screens go, these the error I receive in the event viewer
after rebooting the system:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: System Error

I read elsewhere that the blue screens I have been getting may also be a
problem with bad ram, so I ran that windows memory tester, but I received no
failure status on that test.

My system specs are:
XP Home SP2 - all latest windows updates
Athlon xp 1700+
512 mb ddr ram
ATI 9600xt

Any help that anyone can give for these particluar problems will be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
John

It could be a heat related problem and or a PSU that is getting hot or losing
power..You might also check your cmos battery, it may need to be replaced if
the system is years old? Is your computer OEM or did you build it? What is
the mobo model? Have you updated the bios lately?
Do you have heat sensors on the mobo? Is the heatsink fan on the ATI 9600xt
working, case fans free of dust bunny's?

Thanks for the reply. The computer was built by me about 4 years ago.
Mobo is Epox 8K3A+. I haven't updated the bios ever as I've never
really had any problems. I don't think it's the hsf on the video card -
I was actually having problems with it several months ago and ATI
replaced it for me.

I'm beginning to think it may be dust, as upon looking into the case
there is a whole lot of dust on the case fans, and the hsf for the cpu
and video card. The only reason why I don't think it could be temp
related is because I've had Motherboard Monitor installed for years, and
the cpu and case temps have always been pretty good. Either way, I'll
see if I can clean out all this dust and see if that helps any.

Thanks for the suggestions Jaymon.

After removing dust bunnies from my rig the overall temp dropped 10 degrees.
http://mbm.livewiredev.com/

You should definitely update your bios and chipset drivers if available for
your mobo and any other update you can snag that relates to your board and
hardware. Also check your CMOS battery on the mobo and replace it if needed.
Check this site for updates for your board..
http://www.epox.com.tw/eng/products_content.php?ps=101
If you noticed the problem after SP2 update then you should make every
effort to update or upgrade your systems hardware, drivers, firmware, etc..
Hope this helps
