How to use a controller in steam?

im playing steam and i have a usb gamepad called an AxisPad. it works great for any comp game, but i cant figure out how to use it on steam. i am playing half life and l4d 1 and my stupid mouse pad on my laptop wont move fast enough. and i dont have a mouse so this game pad is what i have and i dont know how to set it up on steam.

You have to remember Half Life 1 (I assume thats what you are talking about) is a VERY OLD game....

I still play it online and have since 1998...

Its nothing to do with Steam....its HL and I am pretty sure the game pad wont configure in HL....

Use a mouse...

Or you will die....a LOT

Yeah, you need to look for the "controller" icon that should be listed if the game supports a controller. Some of the games simply don't support a controller with or without Steam.

There's a program called xpadder (there are others but that's what I use) that can map keyboard and mouse buttons to a gamepad. If you're really against using keyboard and mouse, give that a go.
