ASVal suffers from its small magazine size which is why it is not generally used. It can put out a good amount of damage in X window of time, but the window's length is necessarily shortened due to ammo constraints, vice any of the guns with a high rate of fire and a 31 or better capacity.

This will change after the patch, when the ASVal will receive the extended mag perk. Unfortunately this perk also consumes an already valuable slot, so whether or not you will opt to use it then will depend mostly on the map and your personal taste.
