I recently bought a PIII-650 (SECC2 Coppermine) to upgrade my 440BX MotherBoard. I wanted to buy AMD but I don't have enough money to buy a new machine right now.

Can anyone recommend a good Heatsink + Fan combination for this processor. I saw that ThermalTake has a SECC2 Golden Orb. And Cooler Master has a few options.

Has anyone seen any of these in action?
What can I expect from overclocking this thing?
Is 133 MHz asking too much?

Thanks all,
Terak (feeling like a traitor to AMD)

Heh. You certainly don't have to feel like a traitor to AMD. I think you can be assured that AMD, as a business, doesn't really care about you...just your wallet. I've got systems from Intel and AMD...no difference. One I overclock by FSB, the other by multiplier.

Anyway, I don't have any experience with the two coolers you mention. I do have two slot-1 Coppermines using the Alpha P3125 M-60. This is a fantastic cooler. It's gigantic, and weighs a ton. Also takes two 60 mm. fans. The two clips, one on each end, to hold it on are are real pain. I ended up using tie-wraps as suggested by my vendor and they work great.

If you're interested, make sure the thing fits your motherboard, first. It blocks one DIMM slot on my Asus p3v4x and none on my Soyo sy-6vca. The Alpha link below contains another link with some common motherboards and how many memory slots are blocked.

There's an install guide at (careful, lots of pictures):

They usually come unassembled, alone or with a choice of fans. Cost is about US $45-50.

I've got a 550 (cA2 stepping) running at 803 and a 600 (cB0 stepping) running at 888. Both idle a just a couple of C over room.

You might want to hunt around and find some slot cooler reviews. I thought I had some bookmarked, but I guess I got rid of them.

Oh great here we go with all the crap, but here goes nothing:

Actually that's Intel. Remember all the cheap stuff they did, such as trying to simply overclock the P3 1GHz and sell it for $200 extra dollars? (IE P3 1.13GHz).

Please nobody take this as an incentive to start a full out flame war. thnx

Flame! Flame! Heh!

Yeah, I know what you're saying. In general, though, I think what I said is valid for all corporations. The bottom line is the stock price/profits over everything else, regardless of the "perception" that it isn't. Just my opinion, of course. Maybe I've worked in corporate America too long.
