Got a duron 800 running well on an asus a7v bios 1.005a.
Easily going to 850 (8.5x100) with ±idle temps of 34° for MB and 46° for CPU.
But when i want to go higher (even at 1.85v) the system locks up or doesn't even want to boot.

Could this be a hardware or temp problem or do i something else wrong?

specs : duron 800 on asus a7v (bios 1.005a),256MB QPI RAM,creative dxr3,creative soundblaster 125pci , voodoo 3 3000 agp

I have had this same problem on a friend's computer. He has a Duron 700 and it will go to 850 but not 900 or higher.
He has an A7V and a GlobalWin FOP32 and 128MB PC133 Cas2 Crucial ram.
I have almost the exact same setup except I have a Duron 600 which is now at 1GHz. No problems at all. I don't understand it. I was thinking of putting his chip in my computer and see if it will go higher. If it does, I would have to say its the power supply. He has a 300W Antec and I have a 430W Enermax.
I'll let you know what happens.

Tweaked a little bit and am now able to go to 892mhz (105x8.5) but had to do it by jumpers, otherwise no go.
After all i tried i'm now sure that whenever i raise my multiplier to 9 or higher it locks up.

I am sure it is not ram related also. He was borrowing a chip of my ram at the time and has since ordered his own of the exact same stuff.
Mine is just fine.

Not hardware related neither.
Took out soundcard and drx3 card and still had no results.
That leaves me with 3 possibilities :

1) it's due to my video card (voodoo 3 3000 agp)
2) it's due to my PSU (AOPEN AMD certified 300W)
3) i didn't unlock my CPU well (this i doubt because i
already went to 950 and higher but with lockups)

Somehow i can't get over 900 mhz (with multiplier or with FSB)

Be back for more

It can't be due to unlocking the L1 bridges improperly because it wouldn't go higher at all if they were done wrong. I doubt it is the video card. What's left is the powersupply. This would be my guess.

Just in case this is even remotely related (doubtful), don't forget that at least some of the jumper switch settings in the motherboard manual are incorrect.

First off, I'm using the jumper settings from the web.
I took out my processor and put in my friends. I didn't change anything bios or software wise. It went straight to 1GHz with no problems. But it won't go past 850 on his system. Just about everything is the same between our systems. I will write down all my bios settings and compare them to his but I think they are the same because I put both systems together.
He has bios 1004D and my bios just says 1004. So I don't know which version of the 1004 bios I have but I don't know if this would make a difference.
So the only conclusion that I can come to is that his Antec 300W powersupply just doesn't allow his Duron 700 to go over 850 while my Enermax 430 PS lets both my Duron 600 and his Duron 700 go to 1GHz and maybe even higher.

Anyone have any other ideas?

hey bubba, i don't know if you've tried this, but how about trying to oc your chip (the one that has already ran at 1Ghz on your system) on his mobo...
Could be that there is something wrong with your buddies mobo... although probably not, but worth a try... then you will know for sure if it's the chip or the PSU

Good idea, that's next. Maybe tomorrow night some time. I'll let you know what happens. But if it is his powersupply, then the only real way to do it would be to switch up powersupplies.
Maybe instead of switching chips, I'll switch powersupplies.

I'm finally getting somewhere.
Redid the pencil job but this time with liquid-silver thermal conductor.
Guess what : my system boots at multipliers up to 9.5 but then locks up in windows even at 1.85v.
So i'm making progress.
Can't be the power supply because it's an AMD certified AOpen 300w PSU.
Be back with more news tomorrow.

HAPPY NEWYEAR !!!!!!!!!!
