Sporadic Printer Malfunction

Sporadically the "Use Printer Offline" selection is on
when I boot. After unselecting, the printer will not
function. Must reboot, sometimes more than once, after
unselecting to get printer back online.

Is this caused by a virus?

Possibly...... when was the last time you did a complete system scan with
antivirus software using updated signatures?

I have the same problem as Steve. But I regularly scan for viruses and it is not a virus problem. I use a Brother MFC 4800. So far I have replaced the emachine laptop (it was a brand new one I exchanged thinking the problem was with the USB ports), I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers (several times), I have gone through 2 different powered usb hubs, tried connecting directly to the laptop usb port, replaced the usb connection cable, spent hours on the phone with emachines, Brother and Belkin to no avail. The problem continues to occur. It will sometimes even happen within a computing session -- the printer starts on online but falls offline.
I think its an XP problem since it never happened before I changed to XP. Please, oh please, help me.

(By the way, it occassionally, but much less frequently, occurs with my keyboard too.)

Go into the Device Manager and find the USB ports..... specifically the USB
Root Hub entries..... click on each in turn. Look at the Power Management
tab and ensure that your PC is not set to turn off power to the USB port to
save power.

Cari,
You're my hero. You were right, they were set to turn off power. I have my fingers crossed that this was the issue. THANKS!
