Maybe a foolish question, but will an incoming fax cause
my unattended XP-loaded PC to 'wake up' from Standby to
answer the call and store the fax in my Fax Console's
Inbox? I suppose I want to know whether or not there is
some automatic 'return to normal status' from Standby.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Only if your motherboard has a Wake On Modem feature... sometimes seen as
WOM. Look in the motherboard manual or the BIOS and if it has, there should
be a line for Wake on Modem... ensure that this is ENABLED in the BIOS.
(Note it's not the same as Wake on LAN!)
