Compaq Presario 4640 processor upgrade?

My Compaq has a Pentium II 266mhz processor. It has been upgraded to
256mb of ram, new 80gb 7200rpm hd and Windows 2000.

I know new computers are cheap now, but this machine still works great
and I want to keep it.

How fast of a processor will its old mother board handle ( even a 333 or
500 or so mhz upgrade will allow me run new software and hardware) and
what is involved in replacing it other than swapping the two out?

A 333MHz Pentium II should do it. Possibly a 500 or 533MHz Celeron Socket 370
with a Slotket will work, too... Ben Myers

doubt a 440LX chipset will do higher than a 333MHz. processor. The highest
jumper setting on the motherboard is for a 333.

True. But for those who dare try the slotkets, a Celery 533 is clock-locked and
works at rated speed regardless of mobo jumper or switch settings. As always, a
faster CPU may run into either unanticipated BIOS timing problems and/or failure
of the BIOS to boot when it finds an unexpected CPU type.

In short, a slotket poses some risk, but at today's prices for a slotket and a
Celeron CPU, the combo may be worth a try to crank up the overall speed of a
system. And the oft-maligned Celeron performs respectably with its 128K
internal cache... Ben Myers
