hey,
i recently set up a home network with 2 windows 98 machines and 2 XP machines. The hub acts as a router for our adsl, and each computer connects to through a gateway at 10.0.0.138. Anyway, i can sue internet explorer. Msn messnger and aim did work (i got a "need to update message"), so i downloaded to updates. After the updates were downloaded, i found that they could no longer connect to the aim and msn services. I have had this problem with kazaa ever since we had a home network (even b4 the hub was used as a router). I really don't see why it doesnt work. Please help!

i am not running a firewall on this computer, and the problem is not with the router, as the other computers on the same network can access aim and msn. Maybe the ports are blocked on my computer, but then how do i unblock them? as i said, i am not using a firwall.

a router acts as a defacto firewall and sometimes you need to "forward" or open some ports

hmmm xp has a built in firewall you can disable it in the network settings
