I had Microsoft Works on my old computer - how can I transfer a
file to Word or Exel?

Are you trying to transfer just the text? or an actual icon(small image).

Works should still be able to save in a format that can be opened in word(.txt). If you still have access to the computer with works on it.

There is also a program called open office from Oracle(used to owned by Sun) that can open many kinds of files.
