My girlfriend called Verizon CS thinking her contract was about to expire because she's had it for a year and on her bill there is "1y" listed after both the plan and the promotions - she thought "1y" meant "one year" - but the CSR told her she had a two year contract. She also wanted to know what would happen to her plan and promotions when the contract DID expire and was told that it would remain exactly the same, the only change being the added benefit of going "month to month". Everything I've heard and read is contrary to this, i.e. the promotions, such as free nights and weekends, go away. How can my girlfriend find out for sure if she has a one year or two year contract, and how her plan will change when the contract expires? TIA!

"1y" does mean a one year contract so tell her to haul out her original
paperwork to confirm what she signed up for. She does save important
paperwork, doesn't she;-)
Usually nothing changes when your contract ends. They just bill you the same
month to month. If you had and special time limited promotions-- e.g.,
one-time minutes, etc., they might expire but the basic terms and services
remain the same.

Regarding the original contract my understanding is she
negotiated it over the phone (she was "re-upping" ) so there
is no paperwork. Her bill is the only hard copy that shows
plan details. If her contract does in fact expire this
month, will that show on next month's bill?

Verizon will not tell you on the bill that the contract is expired.

Well, I understand that they won't go out of their way, but
will the bill show any plan changes, such as the promotions
having been canceled?

Just about all of VZW's recent plans (except for certain special text
messaging packages) will continue as is past the contract expiration
date. Most likely, she will continue month to month, with the same
features she's had thus far.
On her bill, there should be a numerical plan code. Perhaps you could
post that code here and someone may know the details of that specific
plan, or you could stop by your local VZW store and speak with the
*manager* to insure the plan's features will continue after the
contract's expiration.
FWIW, I've been out from under contract for many months, and my plan
hasn't changed at all.

Yeah, they'll just start sending you letters inviting you to come in
to take advantage of their "new plans", usually with an accessory
discount as an incentive to get you in the store.
