Hi

I'm a Mac user and XP is quite strange to me.

When I installed XP Home -version to my pc I was able to
install printeres like I should be. But now I can't. The
Fax and Printers window in Control Panel is empty,
although for example from Word I can print to all of the
printers I installed earlier. The Word's (and every other
softwares) Printers list shows all the printers I
installed. Now the Control Panels Printers list is empty
and nothing happens if I click "Add printer". I ran Norton
Utilities Disk Doctor and the XP's disk repair tool. Any
advice is welcome.

Thanks in advance,
Harri

From the command prompt, type

sfc /scannow

(note the space between the c and the /)

Also ensure your print spooler is started... from the command prompt, type

net start spooler

We have the same problem - no printers appear in the Printers list, and we
can't print from OE at all. Non-MS apps seem to see the printers just fine,
and in some applications like WordPad, you can print to the default printer
if you click on the Toolbar Print icon, but not if you attempt to print from
the File menu. Error message is "An error occurred during this operation."

A little background - this happened some time ago, and System File Check
worked. Subsequently, a temp, who thought she was being helpful, started to
install all the XP updates without telling anyone, after which the printers
were gone again. Uninstalling the updates didn't help, nor does SFC now.

When it happened the first time, it was suggested that the problem was
caused by our running Lantastic, required for some legacy software.
However, the problem does not occur until we attempt to update. The first
time it happened was after updating IE6. An identical computer has not
suffered a similar fate as we have not run the updates.

Is there a way we can get the printers back...and be able to update IE and
XP?

Hi Cari

Thank you for your suggestions, unfortunately they didn't
work. Any other ideas?

Harri

I am having the same problem and others. My print server is on, but I
can't add a printer, and the two that were there working correctly for
over a year aren't there anymore. I haven't installed any new
programs in over a month. I also cannot run system restore without
being told to reboot and try again. I can't defrag my hard drive with
out being told that this version cannot run more than one instance of
defragmenter. My task scheduler has been disabled and I also cannot
run it. My Norton antivirus is up to date, and so are Windows
Updates. I hadn't updated windows in a while, so I tried that to see
if it would work and it didn't. I am bamboozled and can't find any
answers on the internet.

WOW- same exact problem here on a machine running XP Professional.

I ran sfc right away- it did replace some files, but did not fix the
problem.

There is a similar problem on 2000 machines that Microsoft posted a fix
for (article id: 271248) - I tried it, but it dod not help either.

I also expanded the main.cpl file from my xp disk and copied over the
existing. That did not help...

net start spooler just tells me the service is already running...

Unfortunately, I don't know when this started as I bought the pc from
my cousin and it came with the issue. It's clean as a whistle as far as
mal/spyware and virii, etc are concerned... it is completely updated.

I'm going to attempt an O/S repair from the disk (pray for me). I'll
KIT and let you know what I find out.
