I can't monitor my CPU fan

I would like to buy or build something that would allow me to monitor my CPU fan. However, it is one of those high-powered fans with only the two power leads and no sensor connection.

Is this possible? How do motherboard fan sensors work?

All I know is that you need the 3rd wire that is the sensor to monitor the rpm.
