ok question coming from a friend and i'm sooo clueless. he's got msn messanger up to talk to clients but he's getting pop ups from it that if he's in photo shop and they come up he has to start all over on the project. so i went to the all mighty poobaa w/this and he told us to do something which i can't recall what it was then to reboot...w/each reboot it's undoing the disabling he did for this. sooo my question is does anyone know how to stop these god for saken pop ups so my friend can love me again...lol
thank you everyone,
julz
Right click "messenger" in "services" and actually disable it...from messenger properties menu under "startup type" (instead of just stopping it)
You shouldn't have to do it everytime you start your computer. It will only come back when you restart your computer if you stop it but don't actually disable it.
Good luck poppins!

see he disabled last nite then rebooted per poo's instruction...lol i'm so clueless here...anyway when he rebooted it started back like he never disabled it. he's getting coffee right now cuz he's been working too long so i'll pass this on and see where we end up then...thanx for the help...he's goin nuts w/this...lol
Maybe he thought that stopping it is the same as disabling it. Just make it clear to him that he needs to actually disable it.
Doing a Windows Update from the Microsoft site helped to make the messages very rare...but this seems to have stopped them.
Not sure if it's anything to do with MSN Messenger Service at all. It seemed to do it when that was completely shut down so maybe it's a Windows thing and not a MSN Messenger thing.
Either way, all I can say is bloody Microsoft! lol

Hey Poo...
I tried your remedy (as juli mentioned) and tried melb_angel's also... but yours didn't stay fixed and hers, well i just couldn't find my way to where she led (there may have been a step missing along the way but i wandered into areas that give me the willies anyway... so i may have overlooked something (obvious) too). i signed up here (as per juli's suggestion), to thank you and angel for your input and help... my next question is about adware vs spyware etc... but i've never been on one of these so it's likely the birds will eat the breadcrumbs and i will fall asleep before i find the right area to pose my question in.
are you saying you want msn messenger stopped for ever? if so there are two ways of doing it. the best one is the first one.
1st: double click "my computer", double click the hard drive with windows (usually the drive letter is (c). you WILL see a folder labled "windows", double click on it. now find a green icon labled "regedit". double click on it (you just opened it).
now do as i say. you see the little + and - next to the writings... click on those when i say open something. open "HKEY_CURRENT_USER", open "Software", open "Microsoft", open "Windows", open "CurrentVersion", click on "Run" and delete "msnmsgr". to delete it, right click on it and you will see the delete option.
oh did i tell you poobaa is my boyfriend? well he is so back off
as you get older, your hard drive becomes floppy, but don't fear viagra is here. viagra puts the hard back in your drive!!!
click on "start" (lower left on monitor), click "Run...". a window pops up, in there, type "msconfig". now a new window opens. look at the upper part off this new window and you will see options such as "General", "Servisec" and also "Startup" (the one you need to click on). click on the "startup" tab, and find "msnmsgr". now that you have found it, you will see a check in the little check box to the left of it, uncheck it and click "apply" and "ok". the window will close and you'll have to restart. thats it
oh also melb is my gf. poo melb and i are lovers

It's not MSN Messenger Service that she wants to get rid of. It's the annoying pop up Message boxes that come up even when MSN Messenger is closed.
(possibly even nothing to do with MSN Messenger Service)
They have university advertisements and other crap.
It's a security fault with Microsoft.
...nothing new lol
P.S. I loved your comment, can always rely on you to keep everyone away from Poobaa!

You are prolly thinking of the Windows Messaging System. Just right click on my computer, and select manage, go to services and turn the "messenger" service to manual.

Adware are only programs and such that display adds.
Spyware are programs that record what you're doing (which websites you visit ie.) and send the results to commercial companies.
