The story I heard was that VZW released too many phones at the same time and
sold out the 9900s quickly (within a few weeks). They then had to clean
out the stock of the other phones they had, and didn't order any more 9900s.
FWIW, the Toshiba 4050 (Sprint's version of the 9900) is still being sold by
Sprint so I don't think the supply died - just VZW's version.

When I read Audiovox's annual reports in the past, they explicitly point
out that there are no contracts with the carriers. The carriers basically
order phones when and in the quantity they deem fit.
Given the number of models, cost of tooling up factories, logistics etc, I
would expect that they geared up to make a certain amount. Note also that it
takes 6-9 months from FCC certification to a phone being available. The
9900 was approved in August 2003.
I don't know the real scoop, but would suspect that it was simply a mismatch
between supply and demand, coupled with lengthy lead times.

Part of the reason was when it was first released, it retailed for
only $150 because of their Fall Special at the time. That was the
no-contract price and everyone jumped on it.
