More info?)
I had the same problem on XP Pro.
SUMMARY: Replaced my missing ..\inf\fp40ext.inf file with a copy of the
...\i386\fp40ext.inf file.
Now, my "Add/Remove Window's Components" screen opens, and has a component
listing. The question is.. "Is this a valid fix?" If I trash my system, I'll
try to let you know.
If you know that this is a problem, reply to my posting, and I'll get your
warning/information.
DETAILS:
Using Explorer to search for "fp40ext.*, I found several old copies of
"fp40ext.inf" and 1 copy of "fp40ext.cab" in various Uninstall directories,
and the latest versions of "fp40ext.inf" (7/17/2004) and fp40ext.cab
(7/17/2004) in my C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\ and
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\6ca7b3a8..[longNumberstring] folders.
Using dos' 'comp' file comparing utility, both of the latest 'inf' file
versions are the same.
Since my 'C:\WINDOWS\inf' folder had a precompiled 'fp40ext.PNF' file, but
was missing the its accompanying 'fp40ext.inf' file. and noting that most
files come as a 'PNF'/'inf' combination (some have an 'inf' file only), I
copied the latest 'fp40ext.inf' version from my
'C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\' folder to replace the missing file.
HTH, and I don't crash..;^)
