Since getting DSL (SBC) & dropping the 2nd phone line I
had formerly used successfully for sending & receiving
faxing, I am unable to send/receive faxes.

The automatic receive feature works, but faxes don't
appear for viewing or on the printer. Faxes sent out
never get anywhere after countless attempts by the modem
to dial out. Microsoft, Dell and SBC have been unable to
help by phone so far. Computer retailers are also stymied.

I think I have changed all the appropriate XP fax config
& modem set up to my (now only) phone number - including
using the *70 bypass of my call waiting (cw) feature.
(The 2nd line didn't have cw). I have the SBC DSL filters
on my phone and fax modem connections.

Can someone help here?

Did you try setting up the incoming connection in the network options? Go to Network Connections, look on the left for the options. Choose Create new connection, then select "set up advanced connection", then select "accept incoming connections". Next choose your internal moden, if that is what you are using, then decide if you want to allow VPN access.
