In reference to Fax Service on Windows xp (home edition)… Need help. I am able to install and use all the Fax services. My problem is that when I turn off the computer and then restart it fax service becomes inoperative. The Printer Icon is there, the Fax Consol is there, the Fax Wizard is there but none are operative… If I open the consol I eventually get a message saying that “was unable to connect. To correct the problem I uninstall fax service (restart the computer) and then reinstall fax service using the Reinstallation CD Microsoft Windows xp home edition – including service pack 1 (this soft ware was installed on the computer when I purchased it) . Everything then works fine until I turn-off the computer, and restart it… then I have the same problem all over again… Any suggestions.

Sounds like you're using an incompatible modem. Is it on the Windows XP HCL
list?

I have not checked. Never occured to me that "Dell" would install a non compatiable modom. The installed modom is BCM V.92. After I "reinstall" fax service it workes fine until I turn off and restart the computer...

I know. You told us that. The Fax Service is incompatible with many common
modems.

Russ, I checked the MS catalog and it states that BDM V.92 modem is comptable with Windows xp. But, it didn't say compatable with Fax.. Are you perhaps suggesting that I try a different modem?
PS.. Thanks for your assistance....

Unfortunately, Windows XP Fax has proven to be incompatible with many common
modems and drivers, particularly older ones, even if the manufacturers claim
they are "compatible" with Windows XP. Modem incompatibility is not apparent
during installation or the initial setup. It only becomes apparent when you
first try to send or receive a fax. The Fax Service will dial or will answer
an incoming fax but then fail with any of a number of unhelpful error
messages such as "Line is busy," "There is no answer," or "Reception error."
There will be nothing in Event Viewer to give a clue as to where the problem
might lie.

These errors have been nearly impossible to track down. To do so requires
enabling both PSS and debug logging of fax transmissions, both of which
require fairly extensive registry changes. For the time being, the best
advice is to attempt to use XP Fax only if you have a modem that is listed
on the Windows XP Hardware Compatibility List and using the latest drivers.

Dander Please check if the Fax service is started when the system starts (
net start). And also check the Tools->Fax Printer Configuration and check
the status of the Local Fax.
