I would like to port an existing Verizon landline number (and terminate the
line) to replace an existing VZW phone number. Before I call CS has anyone
had any issues doing it?

Expect the landline carrier to drag their feet for weeks, judging from what
I've heard. Wireless-to-wireless ports seem to get done in hours or a day or
two, now that the kinks have been worked out; that was my experience when I
ported last summer. But the wireline carriers are still every bit as scummy and
anti-competitive as ever and you will have to keep on them to make sure things
get done.

I issued a port request to move my BellSouth business landline to VZW the
first week it was allowed a year of so back.

There were a lot of problems-- some because process was new for everyone--
but the real culprit was BellSouth who engaged is foot-dragging
obstructionism and a showed lack of cooperation (and at times simple
courtesy) like you wouldn't believe. I even wrote to the state Public
Service Commission and the FCC both of whom were no help at all.

The total process took several months, dozens and dozens of phone calls,
emails and letters-- and wasn't finalized until a buddy of mine who is an
attorney called the BellSouth Chief Counsel and threatened suit.

Do you think that would be the case if in this case since it would be from
the parent (Verizon) to VZW?

This would be a business line transfer also. I could live with the landline
company dragging their feet but my biggest fear is having a number that
doesn't ring anywhere. And at least in your case how did they do the
transfer after the "issues" were cleared? Was there any dead period when
the number didn't work at all?

Yes. Different organizations, though VZ owns 55% of VZW.

There was no dead time-- but things were pretty screwy for a while.

Initially, local and VZW-originated wireless calls rang on the cell-- but
long distance and other wireless provider calls rang on the landline. For a
while, I could still make outgoers from the landline, then that went away.
Then all calls went to my cell-- but I still had a wireline dialtone.
BellSouth said they couldn't "finalize the port"-- blaming VZW for not
following correct procedures.

BellSouth said the only way to get rid of the dialtone was to terminate
service to the line-- but that would be "inadvisable" since I still had
"mixed" service. After some weeks with all calls ringing on the cell, I told
BellSouth to pull the plug which they reluctantly agreed to do. Further, I
told them I wasn't paying them for any "service" after the port request.
They eventually agreed-- but they dragged me through hot grease for several
months.

Bottom line is I don't think I missed any calls/lost any business-- and
having the business line on my cell is great. Clients love the increased
access, especially when I'm traveling. I'm a management consultant so I do a
lot of that.
