What do you guys run on your 1.2+ Ghz machines ?

Just a little question.. when reading through these threads, it seems like "everyone" (bit exagerated of course) runs 1.2 or 1.3 Ghz athlons, and even try to overclock these even further. Now, what I wonder.. what on earth do you people run on these machines ???

Maybe I'm not a real power user, which is why I am more than happy with my Duron.. It runs everything I throw at it with ease (office stuff, VB development, Photoshop, all kind of 3D games). Its just in 3DS Max (that I run occasionally) that some more CPU power might be warranted if I ran this program all day..

I've got a Duron 600@933, but I just overclocked it for the fun of it.. Other than in benchmarks, I really couldnt tell if my CPU where at 600, 800 or 933 Mhz.. In most games even benchmarks hardly make a difference above 800 Mhz once I set them above 1024x768.

So, why do you guys pay that much money for a CPU that is faster ? Is everybody here a 3D Modeller ? Or do we get a kick out of crunshing as many genome@home blocks per day as possible ? The only task that takes forever is booting Win2000...

(maybe Im getting old.. I used to render movies with 3D Studio R4 on a 486-33 with 4 (!!!) Megs.. can you imagine how I feel about my Duron 933/256 Mb ?)

For me (on my 1.56Ghz Athlon) I do video crunching (and I don't mean ripping DivX, well, not all the time anyway..) but my home videos and stuff. I also process a lot of photos (amateur, not pornographic) and some of the filters on that take some time to run.

These activities are all ones that _can_ be done on a lesser PC (like my PIII@815) but it takes a lot longer. For me, my time (to do things I want to) is more valuable. I'd rather spend the time replying to comments and questions than sit waiting for an image filter to apply or a video to create a working file to edit.

Pete.

Actually I don't do a damn thing with my 1ghz@1.13ghz Athlon, except for surf the net and play video games. For me It was the chance to overclock to a speed that's not for sale, and increase the life of my CPU. Why barely get by in 2 years when I can still be halfway decent? In 2 years your 933 will be like a Pentium II 300 is today. On the other hand I've gone the extra mile and bought Mushkin ram that's up to 155fsb. Why dabble in mediocraty when you can wollow in excellence?

funkdog,

I don't think people will see a 1.1Ghz Athlon as being significantly different from a 933 Duron in 2 years. Top end CPUs will all be DDR/Rambus/Whatever and 3Ghz+ AMD duallies will be around. In 2 years my single 1.56Ghz will be very tame as well.

My point was this. Why doesn't everyone drive a YUGO? They serve the same purpose as a Corvette? It's human nature to want the best, right now!

I can see this, but your point read that you had a 1.13 T'Bird with Mushkin RAM whereas the poster had a 933 Duron. As such his system would be really out of date in 2 years but your's would not - was how it read to me.

I was just pointing out that we all will be really out of date in 2 years.

I think the whole OCing mentality comes from
"I have something, what can I do to it before they throw me in a rubber room"

with your Yugo reference, a guy on TV challenged some serious racers saying his 'vette would trounce all over theirs.
One guy came in with a '67 427
another came in with a '76 454
the last came in with a '01 Z06
They all ran the quarter mile in high 12s or low 13s

then this guy brings out his bad to the bone CHEVette
gone was the 1600cc 4 banger in favor of a 501 cube crate motor pushing 600+ HP

He did the quarter in 9.8

Flame not, lest ye be flamed.

I wouldnt mind driving a Yugo if I'd notice no difference to my current car.. that is.. as spacy, fast, silent, comfortable.. the same good finish.. quality feel. Show me a Yugo that does this, and I'll buy it.

Thats my point.. I dont see any difference between 700 and 1500 Mhz in the apps I run. So why spend the extra money now ? Sure I'll buy a 1.5+ in a few months/years when I feel the need.

For someone doing video editing all day, im sure this is different.. But funkdog.. I am curious if you would notice the difference between your machine and a Duron 600 while surfing. I paid my Duron $35... And I'll probably buy a 1 ghz for the same ammount in 6-9 months

Well I guess I bought the wrong chip then?? I think not. It's all about being able to call up my buddies and say, "Hey man, I just cranked this bi>>ch up to 155FSB!!" If we all settled for what we needed we would all still have 486 DX 66's with 200mb Hard Drives. But competition is what fuels society, so we want bigger and badder.

If your looking for a salute for being different and above the competitive nature of human beings, then here it is.

I salute you for being the next evolution of man, if boredom is your game congrats. But computers are a hobby to me and bigger, better, faster is what it's all about. It's doesn't matter if I need it, but I WANT it and damn if I don't have it.

I know!!! I know!!! You can get a few more frames per second which your eyes won't be able to distinguish either. You can also brag about your 3d mark scores and your dry stones and your wetstones and [-peep-] like that then you can waste all your money on the next best thing right when it hits the shelf. You've made a good point. It just gives you something to tinker with when you are bored. It's a hobby not a necessity.

No matter what anyone else tells you, that's all that really matters. That you're happy with your computer.

It's when you start cussing because it's locking up, or it takes 2+ hours to zip/rar down a file, or when you get tired of the 20 minute wait on a cd burn that you'll want to start upgrading or optimizing what you have.

When you get there, you'll know just who to talk to.......
