  1. It's the same in both Windows XP and Windows 7, when you go through the Steam installation specify that it installs in a folder on the D drive, rather than C:\Program Files\Steam when it asks where you want to install Steam.
  2. +1. It has to be done at initial installation...if you already have Steam installed on your C:\, you can move it to you D:\ and use virtual links to link the C:\ directory to the new D:\ one.
