Elder Scrolls Oblivion help.

Ok. I am a breton with 6 skills of magic (destru..alter...myst..etc) and alchemy as major skills and Favorites as willpower and intelligence.

I have a flare spell which does 6 points of fire damage.

I have played the tutorial, delivered the amulet to Jauffre, got a horse from Marborel (or someone like that) and now I have to enter the Oblivion gate at Kvatch and fight Daedric Monsters.

I mean are they kidding me??? I have not leveled up even once during the tutorial(I mean main levels).
Got few skills like destruction and athletics leveled up.

i have to hit that stunted scamp (three swipes with their claws and i fall) like 50 times with flare before i kill one and there are 3 of them inside the city and who knows what horrors in the buildings in Kvatch. How do i get stronger. I know about side quests and such...but is it absolutely necessary to do side quests to progress through the game. I thought they were called side quests for a reason.

Please help me out of this situation.

There is a reason why it's an open world game and has a gajillion side quests.

Majincry hinted at it, but the oblivion gates will always be there, do something else for a while, note however that oblivion 'as installed' will level up the bad guys with you, but if you specialise then this isn't so bad, there are some mods that change the way that the bad guys level compared to you, so that its wroth levelling. you do realise that you have to sleep before you level-up don't you?

yeah monkey hit the nail on the head, you gain levels when you progress enough skills, but in order to actually Level-up you have to take a nap. So, you can kind of cheat the game and have enough skills for Lv40 and only stay around Lv15 and not sleep to keep your level down.

I got like one more question.

Suppose I get 22 level ups in one stat and we need 10 skill level ups in that stat to increase the stat by 5 points when I level up...will the other (22-10)=12 skill level ups in that stat carry over for the next level up or will they be lost forever?

every thing carries, there is no penalty to not levelling up for a long time and doing say 5 at once. Other than the enemies suddenly get harder as they suddenly level with you.
