there should be a kind of tint, and a ring around the core on the ceramic that will be coloured.

Is there any lettering/numbering or codes on the top?

Maybe somebody lapped the core and removed the tinting off of it? Seen some pictures of lapped cores and that's what they looked liked. But unless you bought if off someone second hand, I don't know why it would be like that, surely a retailer wouldn't do that - unless they are hiding something..

What speed is the CPU?

Mirror finish???? Did someone buff your core down to the metal? Can you see writing on your core? If you can't, then um.. maybe it has been worn down?

Didn't extreme overclockers used to sand their celeron slugs to the copper to increase heat transfer to the heatsink? Ah well... maybe your core is just 'special'
