canonical format for UK and when to use calling card

I have two questions about sending a FAX to the UK. I went to the microsoft page that shows how a US phone number would look in the correct international canonical format, but when I tried to apply that to a UK number, the fax wizard kept rejecting the number as not being resolvable as a fax number. Does anyone have an example of the exact, correct format for the UK? I tried +44 (20) XXXX-XXXX (as well as without spaces), for London number.

Also, how do I make it so that my fax wizard only dials my calling card if I place an international call? Should I only enter info on how to use the calling card for international calls, and then assume that the wizard automatically (via dialing rules) recognizes domestic vs. international?

Inside Fax Send Wizard, select Dialing Rules Check-box. Select United
Kingdom (44) from the Country List. Type 20 in the Area code section left
side of the number and then type the xxxxxxxx number (without any dash) in
the number box. Fax will compute the Canonical number out of this.

Thanks,
Anand

Dear Anand,

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my question. Unfortunately, I am still having difficulties with this issue.

I do believe that by using your technique, I could get my computer to send the fax to this recipient, even using the calling card. However, I did not actually send the fax - I just wanted to get to the very last screen of the setup so that I could look at the canonical form of the phone number - that way I could enter the number this way in the address book and not have to enter this number manually every time I want to send this recipient (or other UK recipients) a fax. So I wrote down the number in this format and exited the fax wizard.

Then, I re-entered the fax wizard and entered the address book in order to enter this recipient's number in the correct format. However, when I enter the number in that format in the address book, and then I try to include this recipient by clicking on "to", the fax program still says that it cannot resolve the number as a fax number.

After looking at some websites that refer to phone numbers in the UK, I concluded that the area code of this fax number might be 208 instead of 20, but after repeating all of the steps that I tried above, I am still having the same problem. I also found that maybe the area code is technically 0 (even though it doesn't get dialed when calling the UK from abroad), but again, I came across the same problem.

Maybe I have to see if the fax will actually send after manually entering the fax number (using the technique that you suggest) to make sure that I am using the correct area code to start with, although I imagine it must be either "20", "208", or "0". If anyone out there has sent faxes to London using numbers from their fax address book, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

In any case, I greatly appreciate your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Mike Galant

Ok, I have to offer you my apologies.

I was entering the fax number in the regular phone number field.

I am very sorry for having inconvenienced you.

Sincerely,
Mike Galant
