In Lord Kryo - Part 2 a mention was made of anti-vibration shims under the CPU. What benefit does this have compared to just using thermal compound between the heat sink and CPU. Was he talking about putting the shims between the CPU and motherboad socket?
Thank You

correct me if i'm wrong but i belive they sit around the cpu to make sure the heatsink sits squarely no the cpu improving contact between the two
you still need to use thermal compound

I think the shims are to stop the heatsink tilting and crumbling the edge of the cpu core. They do not facilitate cooling or vibration supression. The shim is shaped to sit on the ceramic (AMD) or PCB (PIII) and surround the cpu die of socket processors. It should not touch the heatshink when both are properly installed. If it does, there is a chance it will stop proper contact between the cpu and heatsink.
