What is the best indie game maker program

Hi im looking for a program to make indie games sort of like super meat boy does anyone have any suggestions?

DIY.
Game maker programs tend to be either bloated or hard to get into. If you make the engine yourself you know the limits, where to look for the bugs and pretty much everything about it.
