I spoke to a store rep today about my situation and asked him about minutes
of use for data moving forward. He told me that he believes the option to
access data without a separate data plan will go away permanently this
Monday with the new rate plans. Pay-as-you-go data use will be permitted on
new plans at the rate 1.5 cents per minute, or about $15/megabyte.

He told me that existing customers who have been using data for the cost of
minutes can continue to do so provided they do not change their rate plan.
Further, he confirmed that upgrading to a modern PDA smartphone could
require a customer to select a separate data plan.

Looks like my trusty old Kyocera 7135 may be one of the last phones that can
use data directly without additional charges.

PS: This is in reference to the no-roam AC plan that should be announced on
Monday and previously discussed here.

I ran into this when I went for the 100 minute promo plans right after
the first of the year and before the current AC plans. The "pay as you
go" option was/is $0.015/kilobit. so.... (this will make my brain hurt)

I'm doing about 28.8 kbs with 1x.
28.8 x 60 = 1728 kb/min x $0.015 = $25.92/min

yikes!!! this can't be right...

Yes you are right. I said 1.5 cents per minute, but I should have said 1.5
cents per kilobit.

I got caught up in this two months ago when Verizon cut off pay-as-you-go
data use on the extended network. I found out about it when they put up a
Sprint tower down the block from where I live, and at home, I've been on
extended network ever since. At the time, I complained about loss of the
pay-as-you-go option, but they told me tough luck. Interestingly, less than
a mile away I am back in AC territory and my 1x connection works just fine
for data.

Today, I spoke with two VZW customer service reps (never trust the first
opinion) and they verified (1.) new PDAs will require a data plan, and (2.)
again confirmed that pay-as-you-go data useage on the extended network is a
thing of the past for all. I guess that puts Verizon on par with the other
major carriers.

While I realize data access while roaming (especially on extended network
partner) can work in certain places, I have never seen this work anywhere in
Oregon regardless of one's rate plan or data plan.
Here in Oregon all we get is data while on Verizon native network.

If paying for data means you can then use it when you roam, that may well be
worth it. Of course, I'm not switching to any data specific plan until I
have to, or until I can verify the data roaming is working.
