Still able to send and receive faxes but the fax monitor no longer works. Have un-set and re-set the properties on the 'Tracking' tab of the properties box, all without any effect. Even when launching the fax monitor manually before or during a fax send or receive does not work as the progress of the fax is not displayed in the monitor. How do I resolve this problem?

A number of standard update and repair procedures disabled the Fax Monitor
in the initial release of Windows XP. These problems were fixed in Service
Pack 1. Make sure you apply SP1 if you notice this problem. The following

An apology, a thank-you and a solution

An apology to all:
-In my haste to find a solution to my fax monitor problem I did not notice that I had mis-spelt the word “monitor and so failed to find the other threads on this topic. Sorry for the duplication.

A “Thank you:
-To Russ for your quick response and for pointing me towards the solution.
I have had SP1 installed for sometime, so that was not the cause.
Also I do not use Norton NIS or NPF, but I do use ZoneAlarm.

The solution:
-The problem with the fax monitor not appearing when sending or receiving faxes started soon after upgrading ZoneAlarm to version 5.0.590.043. I did not initially connect the ZoneAlarm upgrade with this problem as previous ZoneAlarm upgrades had not caused any problems.
The following document provided the clue:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPO [...] enDocument Error: "Rule Default Block Netspy Trojan Horse Matched" when you start the computer

Examining the “Alerts and logs in ZoneAlarm there were entries for “Fax Service and “Microsoft Fax Console showing that ZoneAlarm was blocking the Destination IP address of 127.0.0.1
Under the “Program Control, “Programs tab in ZoneAlarm changing the entries for “Fax Service and “Microsoft fax Console for ‘Access Internet’ to the green check-mark to give these programs the correct access rights solved the problem!!
NB Make sure that ‘Access Trusted’, ‘Access Internet’ and ‘Server Trusted’ all have access permission granted (the green check-mark), ‘Server Internet’ can still have access denied (the red-cross) as this does not stop the fax service from working.
