I had manually entered text values in the Author, Title and Comments fields of 3,000 pictures using Windows Picture and Fax Viewer properties. All the entries are missing today. Yikes! These picture details will be there at times and then gone at others? Anyone have a clue what is going on here?

I operate XP Home and Office 2003.

Are your pictures in Tif format. If yes then the issue is because of Office
2003, it changes the documents type of Tif files from TIFImage to MsPaper.
So even though the file will contain all the tags you have entered, it wont
be displayed in the explorer. If you view the same file from some other
machine that doesnt have office2003, you will find the tags you entered.

The workaround is to change the document type to TIFImage, Goto Regedit,
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.tif\, change the default from MSPaper.Document to
TIFImage.document.
